When do i take my retainer off




















It's very much a personal choice. If you think you might forget to wear removable retainers, now or in years to come, a fixed retainer is a good option.

After having bulky braces, the thin wire of a permanent retainer is hardly noticeable. However, in the early days it can take a little time to get used to because it sits behind the teeth and can cause you to slur words.

With some practice though your speech returns to normal. Any excess saliva you may notice in the early days will also settle down. Fixed retainers do need to be cleaned regularly with cleaning adjuncts like dental floss; otherwise you could experience an increase in plaque and tartar dental calculus and gum infections. Occasionally we have to remove the fixed retainer and provide a removable retainer that comes with the need for excellent cooperation.

Retainers are worn full time after braces and only removed to eat, drink and clean teeth. You will need to provide a little care for your removable retainer.

Bacteria, plaque and food particles can build-up on retainers without proper cleaning. Before putting retainers back in your mouth give them a rinse with warm never hot water. Once a week your retainers need a more thorough clean. Use a drop of dishwashing liquid and scrub the retainer with a soft bristle brush. Never eat or drink anything but water while wearing your retainers as you can break or discolour the retainers.

If you break or lose your retainer, contact your Orthodontist to have a new one made as soon as possible. If your retainer feels tight after missing a night or two, you can wear them continually for 24 hours, only removing them to eat, drink and clean your teeth. Once the tightness disappears, you can then wear them nightly but only do this after your orthodontist directs you to do so.

Retainers are made to hold teeth in place, not shift them. Do not use toothpaste on your retainer and do not use hot water when cleaning your retainer. The retainer should be cleaned using Retainerbrite times a week. Do not repeatedly click your retainer in and out with your tongue as this will loosen the retainer and could result in your teeth moving out of position. For all contact sports a gum shield must be worn. When the retainer is out of the mouth, it should be stored in a rigid plastic container.

A charge will be made for replacement retainers. You need to carry on seeing your regular dentist for checkups throughout your Orthodontic Treatment. Always bring your retainers to your orthodontic appointments.

Patients that receive this will wear the retainers all the time, even while they eat and brush. When inserting, start by gently pushing the retainer over your front teeth.

Then apply pressure, using your fingertips, to the tops of your left and right molars back teeth until you feel the retainer snap into place. It may be tempting to bite your retainer into position, but try to avoid this. Biting down on the retainer can cause damage and lessen its long-term effectiveness. On one side of your mouth whether you start on the left or right side is up to you , use your fingertip on the inside of your back molar to slowly pull the clear retainer from your molars.

Once the clear retainer is disengaged from the molars on both sides of your mouth, slowly work its way forward by gently prying the retainer away from your teeth with your fingertips. If you are having trouble with this step, make sure the retainer is fully disengaged. Before placing your retainer back into your mouth, we recommend cleaning your retainers.

As a general rule, we recommend that most of our patients wear their clear retainer for hours per day for the first 2 months following braces removal. Yes, this means wearing it day and night, and only removing it to eat and to brush your teeth.
